Prep: Abdominal exams: nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours before. Kidney and bladder exams: drink 32 oz of water about an hour before and don't empty your bladder until the exam is done.
An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to look at the organs in your upper belly, such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and the abdominal aorta. It involves no radiation and no needles, and it’s a good fit for a mobile visit: we bring a portable ultrasound system to your home, or to your provider’s office, and perform the exam there.
Exams we offer
- Abdomen complete. A full survey of the upper abdominal organs.
- Abdomen limited. A focused look at one organ or area your provider asked about, such as the gallbladder or liver.
- Abdominal soft tissue / abdominal wall. Evaluates a lump, bulge or area of concern in the abdominal wall.
- Abdominal aorta. Measures the main artery in the abdomen.
- Renal & bladder. Looks at both kidneys and the bladder.

Abdominal & renal ultrasound: common questions
Why do I need to fast before an abdominal ultrasound?
Eating causes the gallbladder to contract and fills the bowel with gas, and both make the organs harder to see. Fasting for at least 6 hours gives your provider the clearest images. Small sips of water with medication are usually fine; ask your provider if you're unsure.
Do I need a full bladder for a kidney ultrasound?
Yes. For a renal and bladder exam, drink about 32 oz of water an hour before your appointment and hold it until the scan is finished. A full bladder lets us see its walls and measure how well it empties.
How long does an abdominal ultrasound take?
Most abdominal exams take 20 to 45 minutes depending on the exam type. We bring everything with us, so there's no check-in or waiting room.
